Sparrow Hawk chasing Grackle

Three days ago I stepped out through my sliding glass door onto our deck and heard a very high pitched screeching sound.  I looked up just in time to see a Sparrow Hawk, I believe it was a Sparrow Hawk, talons out stretched, wings spread out vertically,  preparing to snag a Grackle when suddenly the Hawk banked off to the left and disappeared over my neighbor’s garage.  The Grackle high-tailed it for goodness knows where.  It was quite remarkable to see this Hawk with its wing’s out and talon’s ready to strike.  Why it suddenly broke off the chase when it was within striking distance is a mystery to me.  There’s at least one lucky Grackle out there.  Luckily, my wife did not see the encounter.

Have not seen any more of the deer mentioned in my previous post….more later with some new images.

A Deer and Her Yearling

Today, between three and four PM my wife and I were astonished to see a deer and her offspring walking down the blacktopped bicycle/walking trail, formerly a railroad track property, that sets immediately off the back of our property.  We were unable to get pictures today but will be on the alert beginning tomorrow to  get some shots.  We have not seen deer on or near our property for over two years even though we live less than a mile from a Nature Center that has quite a herd.  You should know we live in the city and have, in the past, had deer come right up to our back door…actually knocking bird feeders with their nose’s or antler’s to get at the seeds set out for the birds in the winter months…construction of the bicycle/walking path probably scared them off these past couple years…more later.
