This youngster was hunting when I disturbed his concentration. As you can see he’s looking at me. I was so attracted to him I did not see the spider below. Thankfully, the camera picked it up. I did not stick around to see what happened next.
This Praying Mantis had been hanging onto the siof my wife’s watering can. I took him out to the garden and he quietly slid down into the mulch to do a little hunting. The light wasn’t the best so I did a litt,e work in Photoshop Elements 6 to make him more presentable. He turned his head to watch me a couple times. For such a top insect predator they’re not afraid to crawl up your arm and have a look. I’ve nevef seen hostility from one to people – just curiosity.
This Praying Mantis was warming up its body in the morning sun late last Spring. The Praying Mantis is environmentally colored to its surroundings I discovered…for feeding purposes. If they live in a wet area they’ll be green and in a dry area they’ll be brown. Both colors are apparent here. (Central Illinois)
